Sgt. Tom Cunningham is the Public Information Officer for the Virginia State Police, Division One which includes 21 counties and four cities in Central Virginia and the Northern Neck. Before he began his career with the Virginia State Police, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree with majors in Business Administration and Communication from Houghton College near Buffalo, New York. In 1997, Sgt. Cunningham graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy and was assigned to the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area where he patrolled the interstates as a trooper. In 2003, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and worked as a Duty Sergeant at Administrative Headquarters in Richmond for almost a year. Sgt. Cunningham then transferred to the Training Academy where he served as an instructional staff member for three years.
